“Cellar Rats” is a TV series about wine that will appeal to a worldwide audience. Each programme will showcase interesting wine makers and the wine they make. We will meet the real characters behind the wine who are full of life, love what they do and are passionate about the wines they make.
Cellar Rats is a TV series about wine. It will be entertaining and informative, but more importantly an antidote to the stuffiness that accompanies many programs exploring wine and wine making.
In the first series we intend to travel firstly to the most northerly vineyard on the edge of the Artic Circle, and then around the globe to meet the people for whom wine making is their life’s passion.
During the course of the series, we intend to travel to some of the least obvious wine growing regions; to a remote hillside in war torn Beirut; to a spectacular vineyard on the slopes of the Andes; and to carnivals of Brazil celebrating harvest. We will also explore the origins of wine.
In addition to seeking out the little know and unusual, the programme will visit some of the most famous winegrowing territories. We intend to meet some of the dedicated and often eccentric wine makers, who will hopefully take us on a fantastic journeys exploring their passion for wine, food and life. Here are just a few of the people and places we intend to visit in the first series if 12 programmes: Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Italy Spain and Portugal.
“Cellar Rats” – Who are the people that make wine ?
We visit and see who these people are, and why did they choose to make a career and life style out of making this most intoxicating of liquids.
The program will travel from the most northerly vineyard on the edge of the Artic Circle, around the globe, seeing these most wonderful of people, and not only the well known areas of wine growing, like France, The Napper valley in the USA and the Barossa Area in Australia, But also to a remote hill side of war torn Beirut, a small vineyard on the slopes of the Andes, and to some of the oldest vines of Greece.
So let’s meet some of these most wonderful characters.
We look into the lives of these people and touch on the more interesting sides of the wine maker, like the man who flies an old biplane over his vines in New Zealand, The family history of a German family (now American) who’s great grandfather started growing vines in the Nappa Valley having escaped from war torn Europe during the second world war.
And who was it that first made this most wonderful of drinks ? do we really know ? Are the oldest vines to be found in Greece, or is it another one of those Greek myths ?
Most wine programs concentrate on the liquid itself, but we will be looking at the PEOPLE that grow the grapes to make this most wonderful of liquids.

Cellar Rats is an entertainment programme with appeal to both wine consuming and none consuming demographic;
• The programs will be informative about wine including: wine growing, wine selection, wine collection, cooking with wine, wine etiquette, matching wine and foods.
• However we will also focus not so much on the wines of the world, but the people
of the wine world, traveling to attractive wine destinations around the world, vineyards, wineries and festivals. We will explore their cultural lifestyles within the world of wine, and the appeal of their lifestyle.
• Cellar Rats will concentrate on firstly being entertaining, then educational, but above all, each programme will have a unique insight into the lives of the people that own, work, and live their lives by the vine.
Viewers will be looking at a completely new side to wine, as they fall in love with the characters that make the wine, and learn about the people.
Each programme will be creative and informative television viewing and a pleasurable and unique experience centred around these people.
The Visual Style of “Cellar Rats”
Cellar Rats will be filmed with a stylish and “I wish I was there” feel to it. Each programme will be filmed in a relaxed style, as to make the audience feel like they are actually there, sitting around the table or out on the patio having that evening BBQ with the people laughing joking and telling stories, Visuals will be bright rich colours and attractive big skies and landscapes, but contrasted by soft warm colours when filming people and close ups. Wine generally has a warm and enriching feel to it, and the shooting style will try and give this same feeling.
“Cellar Rats” will be a fast paced totally up lifting series full of fun and popular music and entertaining, being at the same time informative and educational.
The audience will learn about wine but not realise they are learning it, as each episode will be engaging and enticing and give that feeling of “I want to be there” subtly informing the audience through engrossing viewing.
Presenter led by David Thomas, a wine maker, who with his totally engaging, relaxed and knowledgeable style, is able to talk wine maker to wine maker.
But his skill is in explaining to the audience in a manner that simplifies the technicalities of wine making. Each episode will only have a small amount of time dedicated to the educational side of wine making, we are here to see, meet and great the wine maker, who they are, what they are, and what they do outside of wine making.
To add a bit of glamour to the programs Gemma Nixon will do links and introductions and stand along side David on various occasions. (See photo, Gemma in pink)
“Cellar Rats” is a people programme – not a wine programme.
Cellar Rats is being made as an independent production and the first three episodes of Australia, New Zealand and Portugal have been filmed.
We are currently planning the next 3 episodes of Spain, Italy and South Africa.
